Escaping Winter: Why We Lived at a Swingers Resort for Six Weeks

This is Part 1 of a 5-part series where we break down what it was really like living at Secrets Hideaway for six weeks. Over the next week and a half, we’ll share the reality, the surprises, and the things most people never think about before stepping into this experience.

One of the perks of working for yourself is the freedom to choose where you work. This winter, instead of battling Ohio’s brutal cold, we decided to relocate for six weeks and experience what it would be like to truly live somewhere different. With temperatures dipping into the negatives back home, the idea of trading snow, ice, and gray skies for sunshine and warm afternoons became an easy decision.

Since we own a couple of units at Secrets Hideaway in Kissimmee, Florida, we decided to take advantage of our investment in a way we had not done before. Instead of visiting for a few days at a time, we committed to fully living there. The goal was simple on the surface. Escape the cold and settle into a routine where 80-degree afternoons were normal instead of rare.

For the most part, that plan worked exactly as expected. We avoided the worst of the Midwest winter and replaced it with sunshine, poolside afternoons, and a completely different pace of life. However, what we experienced went far beyond just a change in weather. Living at a lifestyle resort for an extended period introduces a completely different dynamic than a short visit.

Before diving into what daily life actually looks like, it is important to address a few of the most common misconceptions. These assumptions are often what hold people back from even considering an experience like this for a weekend, let alone over a month.

It’s a 24/7, 365-day orgy

This is easily the most common misconception, and it is simply not accurate. Yes, open sexual activity happens, but it is never guaranteed or required at any point during your stay. If you arrive expecting automatic hook-ups, you may find yourself disappointed.

The reality is that the people you meet are no different than those you would meet anywhere else. Attraction still depends on personality, chemistry, emotional connection, and even intellectual compatibility. Conversations and social interactions matters. Even in a clothing-optional environment, the fundamentals of connection do not change.

It’s a chaotic party scene

There are definitely parties, but they are structured and organized. Resorts like Secrets Hideaway offer scheduled events, themed nights, DJs, occasional live music, and even daytime or off night activities like trivia or yoga. It is not random chaos, but rather a curated social environment.

The energy also follows a predictable rhythm throughout the day. Mornings and early afternoons tend to be more relaxed and social. As the day progresses, the energy builds. Evenings are when the resort becomes more active, with events and gatherings that bring people together.

There is constant pressure to participate

This misconception often creates hesitation for newcomers. While you may receive invitations to join others in more private settings, there is rarely any pressure to accept. A simple “no thank you” is almost always respected without question.

People attend for different reasons, and everyone has their own comfort level and boundaries. Whether you are there to socialize, relax, explore forbidden pleasures, or simply observe, the choice is always yours. One of the unique aspects of the environment is that it is highly social, so if you change your mind later, you will likely cross paths with the same people again.

There is a lack of professionalism

This could not be further from the truth when it comes to well-run lifestyle resorts. Staff operate in a specialized hospitality environment that requires a high level of professionalism, discretion, and awareness. They understand boundaries and are there to ensure your experience is comfortable and enjoyable.  Over time, it becomes clear that the staff are experienced and accustomed to the environment. They see hundreds of naked guests performing all kinds of acts every week, and nothing phases them. That level of professionalism plays a major role in helping guests feel comfortable and relaxed.

What becomes clear very quickly is that living at a lifestyle resort comes with no constant activity or pressure. It is about freedom, choice, and connection. You decide how social you want to be, how you spend your time, and what your experience looks like.  That flexibility is what makes the experience so unique. It allows you to shape your stay based on your personality, your relationship, and your goals. Whether you are there to meet people, focus on your partner, or simply enjoy a change of scenery, the environment supports all of it.

For us, the decision to spend six weeks at Secrets Hideaway started as a practical escape from winter. What it turned into was something much more layered and interesting. It created new routines and introduced us to a completely different way of experiencing time and environment.

Check back in a couple days for part 2 when we talk about planning.
